Who Is The Higher Self?

Throughout the ages, Ancient Wisdom has taught the existence of
something that transcends everything we know, and yet is an
integral part of our very being. It has been referred to with
many titles: Guardian Angel, Inner Genius, Higher Self.
If our own brain is beyond our understanding, how much more
mysterious and incredible is this strange being we call the
"Higher Self". What can it be? What "self" can
possibly be higher
than the one you are already familiar with? If this "self"
is
truly higher than what we are normally aware of, how can it be
truly called "self"?
Let us attempt a definition:
"The Higher Self is that part of you that connects you directly
to the spiritual realms. It is eternal, infinitely wise and
transcends your everyday consciousness. It is in touch with the
Divine because it is part of it. Attaining knowledge of the
Higher Self, and its depths of inner wisdom, is the goal of the
Spiritual Quest in all its many guises throughout the world, and
throughout history."
Thus, you are not simply the total of your conscious and
subconscious. There is a part of you that transcends both. It
exceeds anything you know with your present awareness. It is
beyond anything you can possibly know through normal rational
thought. You are connected to the Divine, and this is where it
manifests.
To most people, this concept may seem highly unlikely, or even
absurd. However, a growing body of scientific evidence also
suggests that there IS a source of superior intelligence within
all of us. There is an inner capacity that most us are unaware
of, and are largely unable to access.
In the Indian philosophy of Samkhya, the term for this higher
consciousness, which pervades the entire universe, is Purusa. It
is believed to be free of the limitations of space and time, and
is also uncaused by anything external to itself. It is free of
both pleasure and pain. It is above thought.
Throughout this article, we use the term "Higher Self".
However,
you can also take this to include the "Inner Genius" too.
There
is no real distinction between what might considered
"spiritual"
intelligence, and more general super-normal functioning; such as
the ability to read and learn at superhuman speeds or the ability
to perform mathematical calculations at lightening speed. In
truth, such extraordinary abilities are only part of a vast
continuum that lies concealed within us. It covers a vast span -
all the way from the spiritual height to incredible levels of
performance at more earthly levels.
Through following the principles described in this book for
developing contact with the Higher Self, you will also make it
possible to create a whole range of dramatic changes in your
everyday life. What many consider impossible is easy for those
who have made contact with the Source of all.
Why Access The Higher Self At All?
Some people may be alarmed at the whole idea of accessing a
"Higher Self". After all, doesn't that imply losing control
and
being invaded from something from the outside? Wouldn't you lose
the very essence of who you are?
These ideas arise from a misunderstanding about (a) who
"you" are
and (b) who the Higher Self is. In truth, the Higher Self IS you
- all that you are meant to be. The only reason we even talk
about it as if it were an entity from elsewhere is because we
have been trained from birth not to fully express the magnificent
divinity within us and be all that we are fully capable of being.
That is what the Higher Self really is; the best you that you are
capable of being.
If you were manifesting your very best right now, do you think
your brain capacity would be lying 99% dormant? Of course not.
The problem we all face is that we identify ourselves with the
small "I". This is the ego consciousness that we have
gradually
developed throughout our life. However, this is not really all
that you are. Your ego, your conscious mind, is only a small part
of your total being. It is shaped by childhood, by what you were
told as you were growing up, by the knocks and bruises of life,
as well as the pleasures and joys. In part, it is formed from the
life experiences that you have had up to this point. However, it
is also partly created from your subconscious, and your
connection to the Collective Unconscious.
Thus, your personality consciousness is subject to constant
change. It is not an absolute. It alters through life
experiences, psychiatric therapy, or a range of other influences.
However, despite the shifting circumstances of existence, most
people recognize, at least fleetingly, the existence of a
changeless eternal part of their nature. In these moments, they
have made contact with their essential eternal being; who they
really are.
So really, the Higher Self is not some sort of invading being.
Rather, it is more truly you than you ever have been allowed to
be. It lets more of those moments of true recognition into your
life. Eventually, you are enabled to live your entire life from a
point of full awareness of your changeless divinity.

Goal Setting In The Spiritual Context

Some approaches that are very useful to us in the spiritual quest
are (a) setting a clear goal, (b) affirmations and (c)
visualization. These can be regarded as separate techniques, but
they work very well together.
We shall examine goal setting and affirmations, using union with
the Higher Self as an example.
A goal has often been defined as "a dream with a deadline". In
everyday reality, this is the best approach. In other words, one
sets a timeframe for when you will have attained your goal. In
spiritual matters, this is inadvisable. It would be clearly
absurd to say "I achieve full contact with my Higher Self within
60 days".
However, you can set a goal for the state you will have achieved,
and this is well worth doing. If done like this, it forms a
mission statement that you can review daily and remind yourself
constantly what your chief target in life really is.
It is best if you formulate your goal in your own words because
then it will feel right to you as you read it, or say it. There
are just a few simple principles that should be applied however.
First of all, a goal should be stated in the present tense. Do
not say, "I WILL achieve union with my Higher Self". Future
tense goals are vague, woolly and indefinite in their attainment.
When you set a goal, use the present tense. In the example just
given, a better way to express the same idea is:
"I am in perfect union with my Higher Self", or
"The Higher Self expresses perfectly in my life each and every
day."
Again, use you own words to create an excellent statement of
purpose that is right for you. If you are uncomfortable with the
phrase "Higher Self", then use whatever you are comfortable
with:
God, Source of Life, Divine Spirit......
Another important principle is to state your goal in positive
terms. The two statements given in the above paragraph are good
examples. Do not state it in negative terms or use the word
"not"
in it. For example,
"I am not fragmented and separated from my Higher Self any
longer"
would be a bad way to express it. Why? The subconscious mind,
which you are trying to make your ally in this quest, simply does
not heed the word "not". So your goal ends up reading like
this:
"I AM fragmented and separated from my Higher Self"
which is definitely NOT what you had in mind!
Therefore, your goal statement should be in the present tense and
stated in positive terms. It should also be something that is
worthwhile to you. In other words, simply stating that "you
achieve union with your Higher Self" is rather too abstract. After
all, what does this really mean? If you have no idea, then it is
next to impossible to motivate yourself on a regular basis in
pursuit of a goal that is "out there" somewhere and seemingly
has
little relevance or benefit to your daily life.
Here are some suggestions for an end-goal statement that fits all
these criteria:
"I live in complete and open communication with the source of
Divine Consciousness within me. The knowledge of the universe is
mine and my everyday life is filled with harmony, peace and joy."
"The Higher Self, my own true self, lights up every area of my
life and is my source of Joy, Understanding, Love and Wisdom at
all times and under all conditions."
"Divine Consciousness expresses its fullness within my being,
completely and eternally. My Being is one with Universal
Consciousness and I enjoy full access to the knowledge of the
universe."
These are just examples, although you might like to take one of
them and adapt it for your own use. Alternatively, come up with
you own end-goal statement that best fits how you would express
the state of perfect harmony and communion with your divine inner
essence.
Given what we said about motivation earlier, you are well advised
to add a sentence to your goal that is inclusive of other living
being. For instance, we can modify the second goal to read:
"The Higher Self, my own true self, lights up every area of my
life and is my source of Joy, Understanding, Love and Wisdom at
all times and under all conditions. Through this perfect union I
now enjoy, my efforts are devoted to uplifting and helping all
living beings."
Of course, none of this implies that you are supposed to know or
understand the state of perfect union before it has happened.
Starting out, and for most of the journey, there is no way we can
know in advance what the final state of bliss will be. However,
there is validity in expressing our spiritual goal in the form of
a succinct statement, such as those above, and dwelling on it;
pondering it, making it the object of our desires and gradually
internalizing it until it becomes part of our very being. After
all, even if our ego-consciousness, i.e. our everyday waking
consciousness, has little or no experience of the Higher Self,
the fact is that the Higher Self itself does!
Remember, the Higher Self is part of you; part of your very
being. It is closer to you than any person you know, or anything
you may have experienced. It is not distant from you; it just
seems that way because your mind and heart are a million miles
away from living life as you were actually intended to. Instead,
the ego consciousness has usurped the rightful place that the
Higher Self, the real you, should hold. So, by creating this goal
statement and affirming it, you commit your mind totally towards
the union that will one day be yours.
Do also remember that this approach is merely one step towards
the goal. You are certainly not going to achieve union simply by
stating this goal alone. However, it is part of the fabric of
what we are creating; an essential and powerful part. Nothing
worthwhile in life is ever achieved without tremendous
determination and focus. It is the same with spiritual matters.
Of course, you will be waylaid. And yes, it is a long and arduous
journey with seemingly little to show for it at times. Often, it
may not make much sense to you at all. But that is precisely why
you must have a goal - a clear vision you can hold up before you
of what you want to attain. This principle is true in the
everyday world and it is especially true in the spiritual, where
we have little direct experience of that which we seek.
Once you have created your goal statement, type or print it and
place it in several prominent places where you can see it
(obviously discreetly - you don't really want your boss asking
you about it!). You should memorize it and bring it to your
attention as often as you can.

The 7 Secrets To Knowing Your Higher Self

Each of us is connected with the Divine. The Higher
Self within us far transcends the understanding of our conscious minds.
This is the power that all the great geniuses and teachers of history
have accessed. It is also the place of magic and miracle in our lives.
Here are the seven key steps to contact it:
1 Belief & Expectation: Transform Your World
View!
The first step is to BELIEVE that you have a Higher
Self to establish communication with! Then EXPECT every day that this
communication will improve as you focus diligently on inner growth.
Without these two essential pre-requisites, it is hard to achieve
anything at all in life, even on the physical level. For inner growth,
these two qualities are essential. So set a GOAL to achieve contact with
the Higher Self, review that goal daily, and maintain your purpose with
determination until success is yours.
We are brought up with a primarily materialistic world
view that neglects the role of Spirit. To establish close contact with
spiritual realms, we need to have our entire being - conscious and
subconscious - congruent with our goal. In any major activity/goal, you
have to establish the rules of the game and the way it is played.
Contacting your Higher Self is the same. Therefore, seek out writings
and teachers that expand your understanding of the universe as
fundamentally being a realm of Consciousness and Mind.
2 Solitude & Meditation
Make regular time for yourself where you can be
totally alone. A quiet place is preferable. Just sit quietly with no
expectations. Do NOTHING. This may feel very uncomfortable and strange
in the beginning. Persist. You give time and space for the inner voice
to make itself heard. It will do so either during that quiet time, or
else during the events of the day. A synchronistic event will occur;
someone will tell you exactly what you need to hear; you will get a
sudden flash of insight. All the great geniuses of history have found
times of regular solitude and silence for themselves. You should too.
In meditation, you work to discipline your mind and
silence the internal chatter that constantly fill it. You create a pure
vessel for the Higher Self to fill. Following your breath is an
excellent meditation discipline, as is concentrating upon a candle
flame. Or visualize a golden ball of light in your Solar Plexus that
fills your whole body with energy and healing. There are many practices
that you can study and use.
3 Journal
Record your feelings, emotions, dreams and insights
every day in a journal. This will help you to come into closer contact
with your inner intuitive depths. You can ask the Higher Self questions
here, and then later on record whatever insights/answers you receive. If
you do this regularly with belief and expectation, you WILL receive the
answers you need.
4 Inner Dialogue
Conduct a regular inner dialogue with your Higher
Self. For the next 40 days, decide to keep in contact throughout the
day. Say to your Higher Self, "I know you are there and I want to
get to know you and pay attention to you. Please begin to speak to me
and guide my life" Don't worry if this dialogue is entirely one-way
to begin with. Remember that you have been out of touch for decades. It
takes a while to clear the cobwebs! Persist with this inner dialogue as
if talking to a friend - chatting, asking questions, sharing your hopes
- and begin to listen for answers. They will come.
5 Life Lessons
Look upon life as a Mystery School. Believe that the
whole of your life - events, situations and people - has been structured
PRECISELY in order to teach you exactly what you need to know right now.
Approach life as if the whole of creation is conspiring to do you good!
Whenever something happens in your life, for good or ill, ask yourself
what the lesson is for you. Even unpleasant people/situations have been
deliberately placed there as a challenge to help you grow. As you begin
to view life as a drama in which you are play the starring role, the
role of the Higher Self will become increasingly evident in your life.
Record your findings in your journal.
6 Dreams
Expect your Higher Self to speak to you in dreams.
Before going to sleep, do some stretching and bending to relax your body
completely. Ask your Higher Self a question and expect an answer. When
you wake up, recall whatever you can of your dream and write it down in
your journal. If you are not used to remembering dreams, this will take
time and persistence. However, with patience, you will begin to recall
your dreams AND receive answers from your Higher Self.
7 Mindfulness
Focus upon living more and more in the present, on the
NOW. When you are eating, be aware that you are eating. When you walk,
know that you are walking. The only real moment is now - the past is
gone forever and the future has yet to be. Therefore, work to clear your
mind of concerns, illusions and extrapolations. Clear the mental clutter
from the mind and create space for the Higher Self to fill.
Patience Is The Catalyst To Progress!
Remember, you may have spent your entire life out of
touch with Source. Therefore, it takes time to learn how to re-establish
contact. Anything worth doing takes time and practice. Be vigilant and
practise these seven steps every day, and you will receive the answers
you need. Remember: The Higher Self WANTS to be in contact. In fact, to
even speak of it as someone apart from you is contradictory. The Higher
Self IS you! The real you. So get in touch with YOU!

The
Mystery School Of Life

The reason the Mysteries are expressed in symbolic
language is
because they are an attempt to describe what cannot be described
in human language. Therefore, the description is presented in
symbolic picture form and is learned intuitively. Our lives are
similar. We experience many situations and meet many people. All
of these interactions can be seen as having deeply symbolic
meanings. They are presenting to us the lessons we most need to
know in this complex interwoven fabric of existence.
Therefore, a Mystery School is a place where you
perceive life
much more intensively, seeing the pattern and meaning there that
is invisible to other people. Within this school, you may well
learn a range of esoteric arts; such as Astrology, Tarot,
Kabbalah, Healing, and so on. However, this is not all that is on
offer, and one should be cautious of getting focused on these to
the exclusion of the greater purpose. There is a whole other
depth that you will never reach by remaining fascinated with
these subjects alone.
The whole point of these disciplines is to work upon,
and
improve, your inner being; your connection with Source. All too
many people become fascinated with the mechanics, and become
extremely expert in working with them too, but miss the central
point to which they all point.
The whole point of your life is to create a perfected
vessel in
which the Divine Source can reside. Within the Mystery tradition,
mind training was paramount. The curriculum focused upon
transforming the inner world of the student. It was no less
rigorous than any modern university course that we might attend.
So what would the results of such intense inner training be upon
the aspirant?
It is no less than a miracle. You learn to meet the
strains and
challenges of daily living, and to remain a master of your
thoughts; in control and in tranquillity at all times. Wherever
you are right now, and no matter how things are, you greet it all
with an attitude of total acceptance. No matter how imperfect
things appear, you perceive all to be as it should be.
To think otherwise is to be at odds with what is. Such
an
attitude is to be against the divine plan, and to judge from an
imperfect and limited position upon things that transcend your
understanding. So, the graduate of the Mystery School accepts all
without judgment or question. This is certainly a revolutionary
mindset for most people. Few of us are capable of sustaining such
an approach for more than a few minutes. That is precisely why
the mental training that the Mystery School provides is so
intense.
At the same time, it is not a purely passive approach
to life
either. Wherever there is imbalance, the Mystery School graduate
brings harmony, and where there is sorrow, love. Thus, we become
co-creators within the higher purposes of the Source of All, and
perform the spiritual work that we have been sent to do.
It is important to know that the Mysteries often seem
paradoxical
at the human level of understanding. Indeed, we see fiery
conflicts between the major religions. People are even willing to
die for their version of spiritual truth. It almost seems as if
where you are born in the world determines whether you believe in
the absolute unity of God of the Moslem, or in the Triune nature
as described by the Christian, or indeed in the many faces of God
as followed by the Hindu. Each teaching gives totally disparate
and seemingly irreconcilable “truths”. Yet, each has provided the
world with its own share of enlightened initiates and
gurus.
Within the Mystery School, you do not merely learn
tolerance for
these disparate views. You learn to resolve the paradoxes.
Moreover, this is not achieved by reaching a compromise; one that
may be invisible to the uninitiated. Instead, your consciousness
moves to such a level that the paradox no longer exists because
you see spiritual reality as it really is.

On Discovering Your Bliss
--------------------------------------
There is something we came here to do, and we feel incomplete
until we have done it. This is what Joseph Campbell so aptly
called “following your bliss”.
Following your bliss simply means living without compromise with
regards to all the “Thou shalts” in life. There is a force in
your ego consciousness that creates rules of conformity. Like a
thermostat keeping the temperature of a room constant, most
people have a thermostat keeping them beautifully in tune with
the expectations and demands of society. In doing so, they give
up their soul, and the very purpose for why they manifested in
the first place.
Rather than live from a position of fear - concerned exclusively
with money, survival or social responsibilities – you instead
make your peace of mind and your own integrity your guiding
light. Don’t become like the man who said “I never did a thing I
wanted to in my entire life!” Does this sound bizarre? You would
be surprised how many people get to the end of their life and
concur with this sentiment!
When you follow your bliss, everything is different. Rather than
relying on only the visible means of support – money, career,
physical health, business contacts – you put yourself in the
place where divine forces can assist you in doing what you were
meant to do. However, it is only when you can step out in faith,
take the risks and chances, totally free of fear, that Providence
reaches out to support you.
This is really what being fully human is all about. It is in
opposition to opting out of our heritage, in favor of opting into
the machine-like conformist society. Living in full contact with
the Higher Self IS being fully human, instead of the hugely
diminished version we all settle for today. Solitude can do this
for us. It can begin to peel away the layers of who we think we
are, in order to get to the essence of who we really are.
Why is solitude so vital to the process? The reason is because we
live in such an unnatural society. Our ancestors lived in the
open, in constant communion with Nature, and in spiritual
communion with both the visible and invisible world. By contrast,
we do the exact opposite. Western society, for all its many
benefits, shields us from the direct experience of dynamic
vital life that our ancestors once knew. Muscles that were once
tight and strong from the rigors of daily existence must now be
toned through regular aerobics or multi-gym workouts instead. The
fight-or-flight response, instead of firing up your adrenal
system in preparation for seeking escape from a tiger, is now
used to become fired up with rage about your boss or noisy
neighbors instead.
In the past, we had no need to make special visits to places of
natural beauty, or “get in tune with Nature”. We were already an
open-circuit to the reality that surrounded us. Each of us was an
inseparable interactive part with Nature and the spiritual realm
simultaneously.
Solitude allows us to escape from this highly synthetic society;
so out of sorts with our basic life cycles and inner needs. By
regularly putting it to rest for a little while each day, you
create a sacred space. It is vital for each person who really
desires progress to create this sacred space into which only they
can enter. It is not done to strengthen your individuality, since
this is itself illusory. The reason you need regular solitude is
to allow a place for the incubation of the new birth upon which
you are laboring. It is a fundamental principle of the universe
that time and solitude are essential to incubate a new creation.
In the darkness of the womb, each of us was formed quietly. The
universe itself burst into being from the infinitely fertile void
of silent emptiness. A caterpillar retreats into the solitude of
a chrysalis, and then literally dissolves into a liquid mess
before slowly reforming over time into a beautiful new creation.
The caterpillar/butterfly analogy is an excellent one for our
contemplation. Just like that caterpillar, we too seek to be
transformed into something that bears no resemblance whatsoever
to what we were before. Nothing from the past has any
contribution to make to the new. A mystery must occur, and one
that defies explanation. Our part is not to rationalize, explain,
or study in order to achieve. We must simply let ourselves be
transformed from above.
This is also the mystical meaning of virgin birth, as mentioned
in the New Testament with reference to Jesus. Virgin birth also
existed in preexisting mythology throughout the pagan world. The
motif is common and refers in each case to the same thing. What
we give birth to, through submitting ourselves to the process of
transformation, has no father. In other words, it is totally new.
There is no seed of preexisting human experience. The new
creation requires nothing more from us than that we simply make
the space and time for it. It is virgin-born; born from above,
from the wholly other, through divine intervention.
When we are quiet and let the impressions of the day fade away,
we create that incubation space for spiritual reality to emerge
within us. There is no set time in which the change will occur.
This is obvious. What is required is a sincere commitment to the
process.

For instance, if you use Microsoft Outlook Express as
your e-mail program, you simply select Tools, then Options,
and then Signature from the menu. You can then readily enter the
text there, for any message you always want placed at the bottom
of the e-mails you send out. Other e-mail programs have a similar
facility to create a signature file. Check the help section of your
program , by typing in "signature".
Simply enter the message into the e-mail
program as described. Then test out how it appears by clicking on New
Message. You may have to go back to the entry section and tinker a
bit, altering the length of the lines, or where the text breaks off to a
new line. Also, it does help a lot in the format of the message if you
set the output of your e-mails to be "HTML". You simply go to
Tools,
Options, Send in Outlook Express, and tick the HTML format box in
the sending mail section.
With a little experimentation, you will
soon have an excellent signature file that promotes the book, and gains
